The Mitzvah Services Committee was established in 1992. The bylaws state the purpose:"The committee shall function as a caring branch of the Congregation. Its primary function will be to identify and attempt to satisfy the needs of individual congregants or Jewish individuals, who may require humanitarian assistance in one or more of a variety of ways. In functioning as such, the Committee shall oversee the Mitzvah Services Fund..."

The Mitzvah Services Committee acts as a "safety net" for crises situations of individuals or families in our congregation or the greater Jewish community. This is a function that a regional federation or Jewish Community Center might assume in a larger Jewish community. In our small Jewish community, we take on that responsibility ourselves. The committee works anonymously with persons or families in crises so that its efforts are “under the radar scope” of public view and can not be publicized. This, of course, protects the privacy of the recipients whose dignity needs to be protected also.
